There are good international SEO service providers and consultants out there, but there’s also a lot of hype, like in every industry and any other vertical.

I focus in NON-traditional SEO and that means no “packages” or “cookie-cutter” strategies like most agencies out there. Some of the most common challenges when it comes to expanding internationally are:

Targeting multiple languages in one country

Some companies run in countries that have multiple languages and want to target all of them. The US, Canada, and parts of Europe are some examples.

If your company is offering services or products in one country and want to target all the languages in said country, there are strategies to do so.

How to build the website structure is important and it depends on the services you offer and your company’s ability and team to operate in said languages.

Targeting the same language in multiple countries

English Speaking countries, Spanish speaking countries and Portuguese speaking countries are some examples of a single language multi-country targeting.

Depending on the type of business you run (Services, products, B2B, B2C…) there are different website structures and categorizations that can be applied to your website. 

Sometimes it may even be better to have different domain names with their specific TLD. 

It all has to do with your company structure and what you do.

Multi-Country and/or Multi-language Website Structure

The two previous points have a strong focus on website structure.

It’s important to take as much time as needed to develop the best website structure possible for your company. Taking the time to do so, will save a lot of time and money in the future. Having to re-do a website structure can likely incur in hundreds or thousands of ours, traffic loss and resources.

Some things to take into consideration are: One page per country? One page per language? One page per language per country? Multiple pages per country and language based on multiple sub-locations (local)? Multiple domains? Subdomains? Multi-currency? IP based page structure?

Developing multi-cultural messaging across countries and languages.

If you operate internationally, you know different countries (and languages) have different cultures. For example, in North America you may have language that is more direct and focus on taking action, while in other parts of the world like South America or Asia, this direct approach may not work.

International Link-Building

Having helped a company develop link building campaigns with a website targeting 80 countries, I can tell you that it’s difficult.

However, the average company looking for international SEO is looking to expand to 1-5 extra countries at a time, which is still difficult and challenging but better than going after 80 countries.

The important part is to have a common language between teams and build the proper Q&A systems to make sure everything runs smooth (or as smooth as  possible, we know business is not smooth all the time).
